Updated: Shopping Websites Preferred Over Smartphone Apps; Flipkart More Popular: Nielsen

Smartphone users still prefer mobile websites for shopping than smartphone apps. Only 3% surveyed of smartphone users access smartphone apps for shopping while 25% of surveyed smartphone users access shopping websites at least once a month, according to Nielsen Informate Mobile Insights panel data from January 2013 to March 2013.

Methodology for survey: The company claims that Nielsen Informate Mobile Insights was conducted a  a pan-urban India survey with 10,027 Smartphone users in 46 cities representing all town classes during September-October 2012. It captured information such as operator, operating system, connection (2G/3G) details, smartphone usage and ownership of other connected devices.

Other highlights from the survey:

- Although shopping websites are more popular among the older audience (Panel), smartphone users aged between 25 and 35 years claim to make more online purchases (survey).

- A greater percentage of smartphone users aged over 40 years access shopping properties at least once a month, according to the panel data, however, smartphone users aged between 25 and 35 years engaged in m-commerce, according to the survey.

-  About 8% of people smartphone users between the age group of 25 to 35 years have engaged in online purchases, while it is 6% for those aged under 24 years age group less than 18 years and in age group of 18-24 years and 5% for age group 36 years and above, according to the survey.

- Flipkart is the most popular shopping website with a reach of 5%, followed by eBay at 4%, Amazon at 2.5% and Homeshop18 at 2.3%. Note that, Amazon recently launched its marketplace in India.

- The eBay app has the highest penetration with just over 1% of smartphone users accessing the app at least once a month. Flipkart comes in second with a reach of just under 0.7%, followed by HomeShop18 at 0.4% and Amazon at 0.1%
